The Need

This year approximately 2,500 people in our province will be diagnosed with cancer and will enter the medical system for treatment. In addition there are hundreds who were diagnosed previously and are still receiving treatment or follow-ups.

There are several regional cancer centres across the province, however, radiation therapy is only available in St. John’s, as are some colorectal cancer treatments and other specialized cancer care.

Of the total number of cancer patients in Newfoundland and Labrador, more than 50% have to leave the supportive surroundings of their families and their communities to receive medical treatment in St. John’s.

A cancer diagnosis is a physically and emotionally challenging ordeal for patients, their families and their communities. For many families it is also a financial burden when household incomes decline while medical expenses increase. This burden is greatest for cancer patients who must pay for travel, meals and accommodations while they receive medical treatment in St. John’s – for days and even weeks at a time!

Daffodil Place is founded on providing basic human needs at a time when our people are at their most vulnerable. Daffodil Place will provide 24 suites with private bathrooms, nutritious meals, transportation to appointments and sensitive support from staff, volunteers, and others who are experiencing their own cancer journey.

Daffodil Place will make a significant difference to the health and well-being of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador!

"My biggest fear – and I think about it every single day is – what if the cancer comes back, how will I get the money to buy the pills I need and make all those trips to St. John's that I need to make. My biggest fear is having money to fight the cancer. That is the scariest part."
