Support from Labrador West is Helping Build Daffodil Place

(St. John’s, NL) – The Daffodil Place construction site can be seen from almost any point in St. John’s. However, getting a good view from Labrador City is a little more challenging. Support from Labrador West communities has made a difference in the success of the Daffodil Place campaign. Early this week Labrador City Mayor Graham Letto had the opportunity to see how the donated money is being spent.

In the fall of 2007, a committee headed by Thelma Ricketts began raising funds in Labrador West. Through community involvement the committee hosted events such as Rock-a-thons, donation banks and auctions. Their efforts, combined with a $10,000 contribution from the Town of Wabush and $50, 000 from the town of Labrador City, have brought the total from the area to over $110,000.

Mayor Graham Letto viewed the Daffodil Place site Monday and was pleased with the speed of the construction saying, “Daffodil Place is quickly becoming a reality. The effort from the people of the Labrador West area can be seen in every nail and brick”. Letto also commented on the importance of the facility for Labradorians who need to travel to St. John’s saying, “This project will help lift financial burden that is overwhelming to people living with cancer.”

Chairperson for the Daffodil Place Campaign, John Steele, commended the contribution from the people of Labrador West and spoke on the impact that Daffodil Place will make on the people of this province. “Because of the help we are receiving from municipalities, organizations and individual donors, affordable accommodations will be available to people who need it.” Mr. Steele went on to thank Charlie Ward, Kathleen Davis and Deanne Firmage, for sharing their stories and demonstrating the need for Daffodil Place.

Daffodil Place is scheduled to open in early 2009. The 24-suite community will provide accommodations for those who must travel to St. John's for cancer treatment and will offer the comforts of home that will help patients on the road to recovery.
