Tina's Story

Tina Snow

Tina Snow didn't think that the prognosis was good when her Mother, May Snow, was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Tina feels that her Mother’s first treatment experience, which required her to travel to St. John’s, influenced her decision to say no to another round of travel and treatments. May Snow was first diagnosed with rectal cancer in July 2001. She had surgery in Stephenville and later underwent a difficult six weeks of radiation therapy in St. John’s.

Married for 54 years, Mrs. Snow’s hospital stay was the first time she and her husband were apart. While in St. John’s, she was accompanied by her daughter, Lisa. They were fortunate to stay with a friend of Lisa’s for free. Everyone in the Snow family was affected by their Mother’s illness and endured the ups and downs of a cancer journey that spanned three years. The Snow family did not get any assistance to help defray the cost of their Mother’s travel, accommodations or medication. Tina feels there should be more help for people facing cancer.

Sadly, March 2004 brought a second diagnosis of cancer for Mrs. Snow. This time it was brain cancer. Mrs. Snow didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. She decided to accept her diagnosis and stay home to die with her family by her side. Tina said her Mom insisted it was the physical pain she didn’t want to endure again, but Tina truly believed her Mother’s decision was based on the financial and emotional impact that the treatment would have on her family.

May Snow passed away on May 18, 2004.
